Experts have long been emphasizing that adults may need 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Some people will require a bit less while some may even go for as much as 10 hours. It is tempting to stay late at night and enjoy some extra hours doing what you want to do but a good sleep at night has some benefits:

Social and emotional functioning

Getting good sleep at night affects how you interact with the people around you. In sleep studies, researches found out that parts of your brain responsible for social interactions and emotion controls also go to rest. This means that a good sleep can keep these centers to be in optimal condition when you wake up so you are always in control of the situation so to say. Lack of sleep affects your mood which also has some effects on how you learn things and remember them.

Learning and memory functions

A lot of students cram and stay up late thinking that reading all those pages thru the night will help them pass the test, the truth is that a good chunk of sleep plays a big role too. Doctors from Harvard found out that memory is affected by sleep in two ways: sleep deprived individuals lack focus and therefore cannot learn as much, and sleep has a big role in consolidating memory so it is essential if we want to learn about new things.

You learn things through the day and when we sleep, the magic of how things are consolidated happens in the brain. Lack of sleep affects your focus to process all the information and also impairs your judgment skills.

Cell Growth

When we sleep, there are certain cells in the body which ups their production so all the necessary repairs the body needs happens when we rest at night. There are also evidences that protein breakdown occurs less during our deep slumber.

Avoid fireplaces that burn wood

Wood-burning fireplaces look really romantic but it will not be of any help if you want to have clean air at home. These fireplaces that makes use of wood as fuel produce materials which you can inhale and get into your lungs. The air will have a lot of carbon and soot when you make use of this kind of fireplace. Anything that has smoke is really a bad inhalant.

Filter the air

Using air filters can help rid the air with particles that may irritate your lungs. It is always safer to breathe thru an air system that makes use of a filter. Make sure you also change the filter as necessary.

Keep dust mites at bay

Dust mites love to live in our beddings and mattresses but this triggers exacerbation of COPD and asthma. You can get bed-bug proof pillowcases and covers for the mattress. These beddings are also mite proof. And instead of getting feather or goose-down pillows, go for foam rubbers. Another way to control dust mites is by using hot water when you wash your linen.

Avoid using chemicals

It might be tough when you think at it first especially when you are dealing with pet dander and dust but the cleaning chemicals we used today can also be lung irritants. As alternative you can make use of water and soap or you can even use vinegar. If you want to clean your air at home, do not just mask it with another odor.

Avoid smokers

In the U.S., about 85% of those who suffer COPD point their fingers to smoking. It will be best to stay away from smokers. It is a very hard habit to break but if you are having issues with your lungs, it will be best to quit if you do not want the disease to progress even faster.

Leading a healthy lifestyle may lower your risk for diabetes by as high as 80%. This is according to a research by the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

It is clear that exercise, diet, drinking, and smoking have an impact on the development of type II diabetes in individuals but the interplay between these factors is not so clear.

Experts looked into these lifestyle factors in a recent study conducted in the United States. The researchers found out that maintaining a normal weight lowers the chances of getting diabetes by 60 to 70%. A healthy diet reduces the potential of incurring diabetes by 15% while not smoking gets it down by around 20%.

The healthier the lifestyle is, the lower the chances of developing diabetes is. Reduction of the risks may reach as much as eighty percent.

The proponents of the study gathered date from 92,483 women and 114,996 men between the ages of 50 thru 71. None of the subjects had diabetes at the start of the research. About 9.6% of the male subjects developed diabetes while 75% of female subjects developed diabetes. The experts noted though that lifestyle factors played a good role of decreasing the risk of diabetes in male subjects by 31% and 39% in female subjects.

Doctors recommend to lead a healthy lifestyle at any point of your life. It is not too late to start, and any point is a good starting point. There will still be a lot of benefits including the lowered risk for diabetes.

A lot of people are wondering if you can get something out of drinking beer. Will it really just add to your waistline and give you that beer belly? One really must not be scared of drinking a cold bottle of beer since it still comes with its dose of health benefits.

Beer may come with some bad reputation but it comes with a number of vitamins and natural antioxidants which may help in rebuilding muscles and preventing heart disease. A bottle of your favorite beer is also considered as among the best source of energy compared to other drinks and foods. This just means that you need to know your limits since one bottle can boost your energy while four more bottles can make you fat.

There is also a study which proves that beer can provide better rehydration than water when you are sweating a lot while engaged in activities under the heat of the sun. Remember that beer is about 93% H2O.

In choosing beer, the color will be your best guide. Lighter ones tend to have lower calories but darker varieties has more health benefits.

The darker beers will have the best natural oxidants that can help your body fight cellular damage. The dark beer variants also contain more iron, an important mineral needed by the human body, compared to lighter ones.

You may also want to consider getting microbrews which has more hops compared to the mass produced brands of beer.

When drinking beer, the rule is simple Drink in moderation.

A recent study reveals that kids who are hooked to video games or what they term pathological video gaming, end up having problems fitting with their peers. They also tend to be more impulsive compared with other children who are not addicted to video games. Addicted video gamers are more prone to phobias, depression and anxiety aside from the fact that their grades in school also come low.

The proponents of the study cannot really point out whether the addiction to video gaming came first or is it the depression that started the addiction. What is clear though are the risk factors because of video game addiction of the kids.

The study involved 3,034 kids from Singapore in different age groups who were subjected to surveys from 2007 through 2009.

The experts pointed out though that there are kids who play video games without having any effect to their social lives or life in general. Parents can consider it an addiction when the other aspects of the kid’s life is affected. Some symptoms may involve long hours inside his or her room playing video games, different set of friends, or decreased performance in school. Some factors that contribute to video addiction include playing video games 30 hours every week, decreased empathy, increased impulsiveness, and lower social competence.

Researchers from the Indiana University monitored the activity levels of 998 St. Louis residents aged 49 to 65. The researchers also assessed the interior and exterior states of the participants’ homes.

The study showed that the interior state of one’s home actually affected the resident’s physical activities. It worked both ways: clean homes stimulated subjects to move more, in the same manner that they got more exercise by cleaning their houses. Nicole Keith, associate professor of Indiana University and head researcher of the study wished to know more, though.

Through the study, Keith hopes to find out if people who took the time to take care of their bodies also belonged to the same type of people who took good care of their homes. While no direct connection between the two groups has been made yet, this study might just give people a new means to keep themselves healthy. Cleaning one’s home is, after all, a more productive means of burning off those excess calories.

Dr. Nicole Keith noted that while some people take 30 minutes to brisk walk or jog every day, others exert physical effort to clean their homes. The results of the study will be presented during the 2010 congregation of the American College of Sports Medicine set to be held in Baltimore. This news was released by the Indiana University a few days ago.

Arnica is actually a flower and it comes in many, many different forms. For example, if you want to rub it on somewhere, creams and gels with Arnica inside of it might be the best option, however if you want to take a bath in it, you might just want to use some dried Arnica flowers.

You can also use Arnica as a poultice to truly get those aches and pains out of your body.

If you are not interested in over the counter medications, there are plenty of natural remedies for this problem.

For starters, herbal tea can be extremely helpful, especially if you inhale the steam. By adding apple cider vinegar to hot water and/or herbal tea, you can also get a lot of help.

Eucalyptus oil is another helpful cure. Specifically, again, add it to hot water so you can inhale the steam. Lavender, oregano, and thyme as herbs or essential oils can also be used in this remedy.

Whenever you are going on a green tea detox, it is a great way to not only lose some weight (which is not the major goal) but it is also a way to clean your body out of all of the toxins that you are constantly ingesting. Detoxing in general is a great way to do this but green tea is a great property to do it with.

Green tea, against all of the other teas out there is actually the least fermented, which means that is has a lot more of its antioxidants, which can really help you when you are detoxing.
